Barrel Shipping FAQ

How much does it cost to ship a barrel to Jamaica from Canada? โ–ผ
A 55-gallon barrel costs $80 CAD and a 77-gallon jumbo barrel costs $90 CAD. These are flat rates โ€” fill the barrel and we ship it. Door-to-door pickup costs $30โ€“$100 extra depending on your location in Ontario or Quebec.
How long does barrel shipping from Canada to Jamaica take? โ–ผ
Approximately 3โ€“5 weeks door-to-door including ocean transit and Jamaican customs clearance. We depart every Friday from Toronto to Kingston.
What can I put in a barrel shipping to Jamaica? โ–ผ
Clothing, shoes, household goods, non-perishable food, toiletries, small appliances, and general merchandise. Prohibited: firearms, flammable materials, illegal drugs, perishable foods, and counterfeit goods.
Do I need to pay customs when shipping a barrel to Jamaica? โ–ผ
Customs duties and General Consumption Tax (GCT) are the responsibility of the receiver in Jamaica. These are charged by the Jamaica Customs Agency and are separate from our shipping rate.
Can you pick up my barrel from my house in Ontario? โ–ผ
Yes. We pick up across Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, GTA, Oakville, Burlington, Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, Caledon, Montreal, Ottawa and more. Drop-off at our Mississauga warehouse is always free.
How do I track my barrel shipment to Jamaica? โ–ผ
Track at shiptojamaica.ca using your order number. You'll also receive automatic email updates at every stage of the journey.
What size barrel is better โ€” 55 or 77 gallon? โ–ผ
The 77-gallon jumbo is only $10 more but holds 40% more volume. If you're sending a full load, the jumbo is better value per cubic inch. The 55-gallon is ideal if you have a smaller load, are shipping to a single person, or want to send something more frequently rather than one large shipment.
Can I ship a barrel and furniture together in one order? โ–ผ
Yes โ€” barrels and furniture go into the same container. Add both in a single booking. Barrels are priced at the flat rate and furniture at $8/cu ft. One order, one tracking number, one departure.
Is there a weight limit for barrels? โ–ผ
There is no separate weight surcharge โ€” the barrel rate is flat regardless of how heavy you pack it. However, keep in mind that a completely packed 55-gallon barrel can weigh 80โ€“120+ kg. Make sure your barrel is sealable and structurally intact before drop-off.

What Can You Put in a Barrel to Jamaica?

How to Pack a Barrel for Shipping to Jamaica

Packing well protects your items during the ocean voyage and makes the customs process smoother for your receiver in Jamaica.

๐Ÿ“ฆ Packing Tips for Maximum Space

  1. Pack shoes first. Fill shoes with small items (socks, toiletries) and line the bottom of the barrel.
  2. Roll clothing. Rolling clothes instead of folding compresses them and reduces wasted space by up to 30%.
  3. Fill every gap. Use soft items (clothing, linens) to fill gaps around harder items. Nothing should rattle or shift.
  4. Heavy at the bottom. Put heavy items (canned goods, appliances) at the bottom, lighter goods on top.
  5. Wrap glass and fragile items. Use clothing or bubble wrap around anything breakable.
  6. Label your barrel. Write your order number and name on the outside of the barrel with permanent marker.

๐Ÿ“‹ Customs Documentation Tips

  1. Keep a packing list. Write down every item and its approximate value. This helps your receiver's clearing agent declare accurately.
  2. Declare honestly. Jamaica Customs may inspect barrels. Underdeclaration can lead to seizure or fines.
  3. Mark new vs. used. Note which items are new purchases vs. personal effects you've been using. Used goods typically attract lower duty.
  4. Your receiver needs a TRN. The Jamaican Taxpayer Registration Number is required to clear goods. Make sure your receiver has theirs before the barrel arrives.
  5. Arrange a clearing agent. Your receiver should have a licensed customs broker ready โ€” this avoids port storage fees if the barrel sits uncollected.

Why Ship a Barrel vs. a Cardboard Box?

Barrels have been the standard for Canada-to-Jamaica shipping for generations โ€” and for good reason.

Factor๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Barrel๐Ÿ“ฆ Cardboard Box
Durabilityโœ“ Rigid plastic โ€” survives stacking in containerCan collapse under weight, especially when wet
Capacityโœ“ 55โ€“77 gallons of usable spaceVariable โ€” large boxes hard to seal and stack
Pricingโœ“ Flat rate โ€” fill it completelyPriced by cubic foot โ€” same or higher cost
Water resistanceโœ“ Sealed lid โ€” contents stay dryCardboard absorbs moisture โ€” contents can get wet
Reusabilityโœ“ Receiver can reuse or resell barrel in JamaicaSingle use โ€” discarded on arrival
