Key Things Your Receiver Should Know

TRN (Taxpayer Registration Number): Your receiver should have a Jamaican TRN number before the barrel arrives. This is required for customs clearance. If your receiver doesn't have one, the clearing agent can assist but it adds time and cost.

Personal Effects vs. New Goods: Used personal belongings (clothing you've worn, household items you've used) attract lower or no duty if the owner has owned them for a reasonable period. Brand-new items — especially electronics, appliances, and clothing with tags — will attract full GCT and duty. Declare accurately.

Food Items in Barrels: Non-perishable food (canned goods, rice, flour, seasonings) generally attracts 40% duty plus GCT. Factor this in if you're sending a lot of food — it can significantly increase the Jamaica-side cost.

Clearing Agent: Your receiver will need a licensed customs broker (clearing agent) to clear the barrel from Kingston port. The clearing agent fee (~JA$6,500–10,000) is a fixed cost almost all barrel receivers pay. Having a trusted clearing agent in Jamaica before your barrel arrives makes the process much smoother.

Shipping Cost Questions Answered

How much does it cost to ship a barrel to Jamaica from Canada?
A 55-gallon barrel costs $80 CAD and a 77-gallon jumbo barrel costs $90 CAD flat rate from our Mississauga warehouse to Kingston, Jamaica. These are all-in prices — no weight fees, no fuel surcharges. If you want us to pick up from your home, add $30–$100 depending on your location.
What does the receiver in Jamaica have to pay?
Your receiver pays Jamaica Customs directly. Typical charges include: clearing agent fee (~JA$6,500–10,000), GCT at 15% on the assessed CIF value, customs duty (0–30% depending on contents and age of items), and a small stamp duty of JA$100. Personal effects that have been owned for a while may qualify for duty exemptions. New items — especially electronics — attract full duty and GCT.
What is the total cost to ship a barrel to Jamaica?
A typical shipment: Canada side: $80–$120 CAD (barrel + optional pickup). Jamaica side: JA$7,000–25,000+ ($50–175 CAD) depending on contents. For a barrel of used clothing and household goods picked up in Toronto, total cost both sides is typically $170–$295 CAD equivalent. Barrels with new goods, electronics, or large amounts of food will have higher Jamaica-side fees.
How is furniture shipping to Jamaica priced?
Custom items like furniture and appliances are priced at $8 CAD per cubic foot. Measure length × width × height in inches, divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet, then multiply by $8. A standard 3-seater sofa (84×36×34 inches) = 59.5 cu ft × $8 = $476 CAD. Use the calculator above for an instant estimate on any item.
Can I mix barrels and furniture in one shipment?
Yes — many customers ship barrels and furniture together. Barrels are priced at the flat rate and furniture/appliances at $8/cu ft. It all goes into the same container departure and you receive one combined order number and tracking.
Are there any hidden fees?
No hidden fees on our end. You pay the barrel rate or the cubic foot rate, plus an optional pickup fee. That's it. We do not re-weigh at the warehouse, we do not add fuel surcharges, and there are no processing fees. Jamaica Customs fees are separate and paid by your receiver directly to Jamaican authorities.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Interac e-Transfer and cash at the warehouse. Payment is due at time of drop-off or pickup. Online credit card payments are not currently available. For large shipments or businesses, contact us to discuss payment arrangements.
How much does it cost to send food to Jamaica in a barrel?
Shipping the barrel from Canada costs the same regardless of contents — $80 for a 55-gal or $90 for a 77-gal. However, food attracts higher customs duty in Jamaica: most non-perishable food items attract approximately 40% duty plus 15% GCT. This means a barrel packed primarily with food will have significantly higher Jamaica-side costs than one with clothing and household goods. Factor this in when packing.
