Shipping to Jamaica
for the First Time?

Sending a barrel to family in Jamaica for the first time can feel like a lot. Here's the whole process broken into six simple steps β€” no guesswork, no surprises.

From Booking to Delivery

Here's exactly what happens, start to finish.

Step 1

Decide What You're Sending

A 55 or 77-gallon barrel covers clothing and household goods at a flat rate. Furniture and appliances are priced by size instead. Not sure which barrel fits your load? See our size guide β†’

Step 2

Book Online

Enter your items and address, and sign our service agreement at shiptojamaica.ca. You'll need your own ID and your receiver's Jamaican Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN) β€” ask them for it ahead of time.

Step 3

Pack It Properly

Pack tightly, check what's allowed before you seal it, and label the outside with your order number. Read our packing guide β†’ and check the prohibited items list β†’ first.

Step 4

Drop Off or Schedule Pickup

Bring your item to our Mississauga warehouse for free anytime, or book pickup for a flat fee based on your area. See pickup fees by area β†’

Step 5 β€” Every 2 Weeks

It Ships to Kingston

Once received at our warehouse, your item goes out with the next departure β€” sailing every 2 weeks to Kingston port. Track every update at shiptojamaica.ca using your order number.

Step 6 β€” 3–4 weeks at sea

It Arrives in Kingston

Your container is discharged at Kingston’s marine terminal, then moves under Customs control to our agent’s bonded warehouse, where it is unpacked and your barrel is separated out.

Step 7 β€” 4–6 weeks total

Receiver Clears and Collects

Our partner agent at that warehouse handles the documentation and storage and contacts your receiver. They can clear customs themselves or have our agent do it for a fee. Once the duty and GCT are paid they collect the shipment from the warehouse β€” not from the port. See what that typically costs β†’

First-Time Shipper FAQ

What do I need before booking my first shipment to Jamaica? β–Ό
You'll need your own ID and your receiver's Jamaican Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN), which is required for them to clear the shipment through customs. You'll also sign our service agreement when you book online.
Should I book a barrel or a custom item shipment? β–Ό
A barrel (55 or 77 gallon) is a flat rate and best for clothing, household goods, and general items. Furniture and appliances are priced by size instead, using length, width, and height in our online calculator.
Can I edit my order after booking? β–Ό
Yes, an order can be edited freely until it reaches "Received at Mississauga Warehouse" status. Once the items are physically received, the order is locked and can't be changed.
How do I know if my item is allowed? β–Ό
Most clothing, household goods, and sealed non-perishable food are allowed. Batteries of any kind (including laptops, phones, and e-bikes), firearms, flammable materials, and a handful of specific food items like honey and lobster are prohibited. Check our full list before you pack.
Who pays customs duty when my shipment arrives? β–Ό
The receiver in Jamaica pays customs duty and GCT when the shipment is cleared at our bonded warehouse in Kingston β€” this is separate from our shipping fee and isn't something we charge or collect.
How much does it cost to ship a barrel to Jamaica? β–Ό
A 55-gallon barrel costs $90 CAD and a 77-gallon jumbo costs $120 CAD, flat rate from our Mississauga warehouse to Kingston. Pickup adds $40–$100 depending on your area, or drop off free β€” customs fees in Jamaica are separate and paid by the receiver.
