You are responsible for packaging items before drop-off. Follow these tips to ensure your items arrive safely at Kingston port.
Cover furniture with moving blankets, bubble wrap, or stretch wrap. Pay special attention to corners and edges which are most vulnerable during ocean shipping.
Remove legs from sofas and tables, disassemble bed frames, take drawers out of dressers. This reduces dimension and lowers your shipping cost.
Fridges, washing machines, and dishwashers must be completely emptied and dry before shipping. Remove all food, water, and detergent. Tape doors shut.
Use the original manufacturer's box if available for TVs and electronics. If not, use a custom box with foam padding on all sides and mark FRAGILE.
Write your name and order number on every item with a permanent marker. This helps us identify your items quickly at the warehouse and during customs.
Provide an accurate description of all items being shipped. Accurate customs declarations help your receiver avoid delays and unexpected fees at Jamaican customs.
Items that arrive properly prepared clear our warehouse faster and are less likely to be damaged in transit. Here's how to prep the most common items.
Our rate covers ocean freight from Canada to Kingston port only. Your receiver in Jamaica is responsible for all customs fees charged by the Jamaica Customs Agency.
Rates vary by item type. Used furniture and appliances owned for 6+ months may qualify for reduced duty as personal effects. New items attract full duty rates (typically 15โ30% of assessed value).
Jamaica's equivalent of HST. Currently 15%, applied to most imported goods on the CIF value (your declared value + insurance + our shipping fee). Assessed by Jamaica Customs on arrival.
Your receiver will need a licensed customs broker to process the shipment at Kingston port. This fee (~JA$6,500โ15,000 depending on shipment size) is standard and paid directly to the clearing agent.
Tip for your receiver: Arrange a clearing agent in Kingston before your furniture arrives. Having an agent ready means the shipment can be cleared within days of arrival โ avoiding port storage fees that accumulate daily. Your receiver should also have their TRN (Taxpayer Registration Number) ready, as it's required for customs clearance.
